About Us

The only authentic way to write an “ABOUT US” section is start from the beginning. So here it goes; this is my brother Jeff and I. We’re total opposites in every aspect of the word. When I moved back to NY in the fall of 2009 to be closer to family, he packed up and moved to LA the following spring, and we’ve now lived on opposite coasts for a decade and a half.

Sadden Brothers & Co. was started shortly after I graduated from NYU. What began as a spare time nights and weekend project on top of my fulltime job has evolved into a passion project that’s all consuming. My brother has been my moral support throughout the project, picking me up when I stumble, hence the name Sadden Brothers & Co.

People always ask, “So how did you get this idea?” The seed was planted halfway through my Master’s degree, on a weekend trip in August of 2013, up in the Hudson Valley. After touring Tuthilltown Spirits and chatting with one of the founders, I decided to make my capstone business plan a craft distillery. Since then, I’ve made it my mission to consume every ounce of knowledge possible about craft distilling.

Our trajectory began at a program Cornell University offered in October, 2013. It was designed for farmers trying to take advantage of some recent law changes. The weekend long seminar, held in the Catskills, introduced me to like-minded distillers from across the state and around the world.

I quickly decided that no matter what the outcome of the feasibility study, at the very least, I would have the coolest business plan at graduation. I continued my research and worked diligently to create a true road map for a business starting at multiple levels of capital investment. I joined the two major craft trade groups; American Distilling Institute and the American Craft Spirits Association. Jeff and I went to four different conventions, traveling to Philadelphia, Chicago, Baltimore, Nashville, and San Diego to learn as much as we could about the industry.

In the beginning, the goal was to graduate and educate myself on the laws, processes, and nuances of an emerging industry. However, in August 2014, with degree in hand, I decided to incorporate. The Queens Borough Distillery Capstone project evolved into Sadden Brothers & Co. Distilling Corp., and we decided to give the craft distillery “the good ole college try.”

I wanted to see how far I could take it, so we found a corner in East New York and I submitted a Federal DSP application in August 2015. In May of 2016, the TTB granted us license NY-21086. This gave me enough confidence to start a bootstrap plan, file for a license with the State of NY, and purchase a small experimental still. The small still arrived in the fall of 2016, New York State approved us in May of 2017, and our little NANO Distillery was born.

Armed with moxie and a determination to create a Top Shelf Spirit, we started experimentation in the fall of 2017. The company has gone through multiple iterations and has been forced to pivot numerous times. These setbacks, as frustrating as they can be, have only helped us to develop a level of patience that has become absolutely crucial in developing a perfectly aged spirit.

With that said, the next question I get is, “What’s your point of differentiation?” Simply put, It’s Our Story and Our Beliefs.

In a city of 8.5 million that doesn’t care if you fail or succeed, in a place that sometimes feels like it’s working against you, it’s our belief that it’s crucial to be “world class” and “constantly strive for excellence.” This is our livelihood. So, when we distill, our primary focus is on quality and flavor. That’s why we craft every batch ourselves on our Nano still in East New York.

We don’t source our spirits from Kentucky or Indiana; we make them by hand in New York City, for New York City. We’re not a big corporate brand that makes spirits in a monstrous industrial refinery to be shipped around the globe. We’re a small company that’s focused on quality and creating a premiere boutique spirit. We hope you enjoy our products and drink them responsibly. Thank You for all your support. Cheers!!
